Rowers on song at world cup

Several NSWIS rowers opened the rowing cup season in Sydney over the weekend with medal winning performances.

2012 Olympic silver medallist James Chapman and London Olympian Tess Gerrand were the standout NSWIS performers from the regatta with each winning a gold medal. Chapman secure gold as a member of the Australian men’s four crew, while Gerrand joined fellow NSWIS athlete Genevieve Horton in the women’s eight to win gold. Gerrand then added bronze in the women’s pair to her collection.

Silver medals at the regatta went to Spencer Turrin and Alexander Lloyd in the men’s four, while world cup debutant Kieran Kolbeke won silver in the men’s single scull.

NSWIS athletes Alexander Belonogoff and Ryan Edwards won bronze in the men’s double scull, with Jack Hargreaves, Nicholas Wheatley and Thomas Sacre taking bronze as part of the Australian men’s eight crew.

The world cup also doubled as the annual interstate rowing regatta, with NSW continuing their dominance in the men’s eight to win their sixth consecutive Kings’ Cup.

NSWIS athletes Turrin, Chapman, Dan Noonan, Fergus Pragnell, Matt Ryan, Nicholas Purnell, Francis Hegerty, Samuel Loch and cox Toby Lister withheld a late challenge from Victoria to take gold.
