Girdlestone Set to Row for Gold

NSWIS rower Cameron Girdlestone goes for gold tonight on the picturesque Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas course.

Girdlestone and the men’s quadruple sculls crew will row in the final with a medal well within their reach.

The Australians qualified for the final with victory in their heat on the opening day of the rowing competition.

Girdlestone will be joined in the boat by Karsten Forsterling, Alexander Belonogoff and James McRae.

The Australian crew won silver at last year’s world championships in France.

Swimmer Jacob Hansford will be in action this morning in the final of the 4 x 200m freestyle relay.

Australia finished fifth in their morning heat, but go into the final as the sixth fastest qualifier.

Hansford swam the third leg for the Australian team, registering a 1:47.70 split in a heat won by Great Britain

Australia will start from lane seven, with individual gold medallist Mack Horton looking to add to his Rio haul.

Shooters James Willett and Daniel Repacholi are also in action.

Willett will compete in the men’s double trap and comes into the Games in good form having won the Rio test event.

Repacholi will be out to improve on his opening day performance when he returns for the 50m Pistol event.

In the water polo pool, a strong NSWIS contingent will feature as the Sharks take on Japan in their third game at these Olympics.
