Competition Begins for NSWIS sharp-shooters

Australia’s campaign on the shooting range is underway with NSWIS athletes Daniel Repacholi and Blake Blackburn competing in the 10m Air Pistol event overnight.

Neither progressed to the final round, with Blackburn in 36^th and Repacholi finishing 44^th.

Both found themselves well off the pace following opening rounds of 91 before storming back up the leaderboard with some precision shooting in the rounds that followed.

Blackburn continued to climb with consistent rounds in the mid to high-90’s, while Repacholi would unfortunately slip well down the rankings with a final round 89.

Repacholi is in action again in the 50m Air Pistol event on Wednesday.

Chris Yan was bundled out of the table tennis men’s singles event despite taking two games off Russian Aleksandar Karakesevic.

After letting a lead in the fourth game slip, Yan breathed life into the contest by coming from behind to win the fifth.

Game six was all one-way traffic though, with Karakesevic taking the match 4-2 (8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 9-11, 12-10, 3-11).

NSWIS judoka Joshua Katz has already put the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on his radar following his elimination from the Rio competition.

Competing in the 60kg division, Katz lost his first round match-up with Uzbekistan’s Diyorbek Urozboev.

At just 18, Katz became Australia’s youngest ever judoka to compete in Olympic competition but succumbed to the experience of Urozboev 1:17 into their bout.

“I always knew it was going to be tough as he is one of the top boys and I won’t be surprised if I see him in a medal fight today,” Katz told the AOC website.

Joshua’s brother and fellow NSWIS athlete Nathan is in action tonight against reigning African champion Imad Bassou of Morocco in the 66kg division.
