As the Closing Ceremony brings the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to an end, Australia finish atop the medal tall with 80 gold, 59 silver and 59 bronze.

It was a spectacular and memorable home games, which concluded in the same way it began – with Australians on the podium.

 

Sunday 15th April – Day 11

It was also a stunning finish to the games for Kurt Fearnley and Madison de Rozario as they shone in the Men’s and Women’s T54 Marathon. Both athletes secured gold medals in the event, capping off a successful meet for de Rozario and a successful career for Fearnley.

The Aussie netball squad – including Gabi Simpson, Kim Ravillion and Susan Pettitt – succumbed to England in their final to take silver.

In the Squash, Donna Urquart claimed a bronze in the Squash Women’s Doubles with her partner Rachael Grinham.

 

Saturday 14th April – Day 10

On the penultimate day of competition it was the team sports that had everyone’s attention. In the Men’s Hockey the Kookaburras, featuring Tom Craig, Matthew Dawson, Lachlan Sharp and Flynn Ogilvie, took gold with a 2-0 win over New Zealand. In the Women’s the Hockeyroos, including captain Emily Smith, Grace Stewart, Kaitlin Nobbs and Jocelyn Bartram, had to settle for silver, going down 4-1 in the final to the New Zealand outfit.

It was also a huge day for the Squash, with Cameron Pilley & Donna Urquart winning gold in the Squash Mixed Doubles whilst David Palmer took gold with his teammate in the Squash Men’s Doubles.

In the boxing arena Anja Stridsman took gold in the Women’s 60kg final bout, defeating Englishwoman Paige Murney.

Jim Bailey claimed a silver medal in the Queen’s Prize Individual Finals for the Full Bore Shooting.

 

 

Friday 13th April – Day 9

Day 9 of competition on the Gold Coast saw medals in the diving pool and on the bowls green.

Diver Declan Stacey won bronze in the Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform final alongside partner Domonic Bedggood. Esther Qin followed her gold in the synchro event with bronze in the 1m Springboard final.

Aaron Wilson won a dominant gold medal in the Men’s Singles Lawn Bowls, but teammate Aron Sherriff was narrowly beaten in the final of the Men’s Fours – having to settle for silver.

 

Thursday 12th April – Day 8

Gold medals were aplenty on a successful day on the Gold Coast for the Australian team.

In the Women’s Discus former World Champion Dani Stevens was in imperious form, winning gold in a Commonwealth Games record. Indeed, all six of her throws would have been enough to win her the gold medal with an ultimate throw of 68.26m securing the top spot.

12 years after she made her Commonwealth Games debut in Melbourne, diver Melissa Wu won a brilliant gold medal in the 10m Platform. The Aussies picked up another gold medal in Lawn Bowls, with Natasha Scott part of the victorious Women’s Triples team.

In Beach Volleyball Mariafe Artacho del Solar – along with partner Taliqua Clancy – was defeated in the gold medal match to take home a silver medal.

 

Wednesday 11th April – Day 7

Aussie athletes won several gold medals on Day 7 of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Daniel Repacholi won the Men’s 50m Pistol with a Commonwealth Games record. Esther Qin held her nerve and, alongside teammate Georgia Sheehan, won a thrilling gold in the Women’s Synchronised 3m Springboard. Finally Brandon Starc produced a personal best performance to win High Jump gold.

There were also two bronze medals to celebrate, with Danielle Prince and Enid Sung combining to win bronze in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Final, and Kaye Scott taking bronze in the Women’s 69kg Boxing.

Tuesday 10th April – Day 6

One of the highlights of Day 6 for the Australians came in the Men’s and Women’s T54 1500m. First in the women’s event Madi de Rozario streaked away from the field to win a superb gold, closely followed by Angela Ballard who took silver. In the men’s event Paralympic legend Kurt Fearnley won silver in his last ever race on the track.

Elsewhere in Carrara Stadium 20-year-old Alexandra Hulley demonstrated her potential in the Hammer Throw, winning a silver medal.

In the final night of action in the pool Tim Hodge grabbed his second silver medal of the Games, this time in the S9 100m Backstroke. Matt Wilson & Brad Woodward safely negotiated the Men’s Australian 100m Medley Relay team through the heats on their way to a thrilling gold medal in the final.

 

Monday 9th April – Day 5

Gold was high on the agenda on the Gold Coast on Day 5. Kelsey Cottrell and Natasha Scott were part of the victorious Lawn Bowls Fours team who triumphed over South Africa in a tense final.

This was followed by gold on the athletics track, with Evan O’Hanlon storming to victory in the T38 100m.

In the pool Matt Levy showed his class to take S7 50m Freestyle gold and Brad Woodward snared his second silver medal of the Games in the 200m Backstroke.

A silver for Kerry Bell in the 10m Air Pistol final rounded off an excellent day of competition.

Sunday 8th April – Day 4

On the first day of Athletics competition Erin Cleaver came in second in the T38 Long Jump, whilst Taylor Doyle took bronze in the same event.

In the Lawn Bowls Aron Sheriff was part of the Australian Men’s Triples team that was just edged out of the gold medal spot by Scotland.

Kaarle McCulloch completed a brilliant Commonwealth Games with silver in the Keirin – making her personal medal haul two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Saturday 7th April – Day 3

Kaarle McCulloch continued a very successful competition with her second gold of the Games – this time in the 500m Time Trial.

At the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Timothy Hodge was part of an all Australian podium in the SB8 100m Breaststroke, winning silver.

In the Para Triathlon athlete Lauren Parker led for most of the race before being caught on the final leg to push her back to bronze. It’s a simply incredible performance from Parker, who transitioned from elite triathlete to elite para triathlete following an accident in training only 12 months ago.

Friday 6th April – Day 2

It was another successful day for Australian athletes at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, again at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and at the velodrome.

Cyclist Kaarle McCulloch followed up her gold in the Team Sprint from the first day with an impressive ride to take bronze in the Sprint.

In the pool James Magnussen contributed to his third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay, swimming a fantastic second leg for the team.

Perhaps the highlight of the night came through debutant Brad Woodward however, who took silver in the 100m Backstroke just behind compatriot Mitch Larkin.

Thursday 5th April – Day 1

The biggest highlight for Day 1 was the performance of the Australian cyclists at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.

In the Women’s Team Sprint Kaarle McCulloch, along with her partner Stephanie Morton, won gold in a Commonwealth Games record time. This was followed up by the Women’s Team Pursuit team – including Ashlee Ankudinoff – also taking gold in a Commonwealth Games record time.

Swimmer Matt Wilson raced brilliantly against a competitive field to take bronze in the Men’s 200m Breaststroke – a great result on his Commonwealth Games debut.
